I like a page for a sanctuary for senior dogs. Recently they took in a pit bull who has issues with other dogs in her foster home. And they post a lot of stuff about her. When another post came up last night I had had it and unliked the page. FB asks you to let the page know why you are unliking it so I did. Below is our conversation. I can't be the only one who is sick to death of rude, dumb people telling you to "get educated".

I am unliking your page. Although I love senior dogs I noticed recently a lot of posts about a pit bull. I don't feel for the most part that pit bulls are safe and don't want to see them promoted. After working at a shelter for many years that housed several dogs in the same kennel I have seen MANY horrible pit bull mailings and killings so I have no desire to see a breed bred to fight and kill promoted as something that they are not

Good to see you go. Staffordshire terriers have been trained to fight by bad people. They were bred to be loyal, loving family dogs. They are not bad dogs. You need to educate yourself more on the breed.

Wow what a rude thing to say from a business perspective. They were and are bred to fight and attack. It is in their dna just as much as herding and other behaviors is bred into other breeds. To deny that is irresponsible. There are attacks and maulings and killings by theses dogs everyday. It is you who should educate yourself. I am just one of many who are tired of seeing this fighting breed promoted. Most people are not going to tell you. They will just stop supporting you because they don't want to listen to rude and inaccurate comments like the ones you just sent me.

  • Beth Kehoe The rescue showed their ignorance in their reply.
  • AJ Ravinsky They love to tell us to "get educated". To me that is the ultimate insult because they assume we know nothing about the breed. You have worked for shelters and so have I. I have also witnessed a horrific pit bull attack. I also have an IQ of 180 and have belonged to MENSA in the past, so I really don't need those with often sub-standard spelling and grammatical abilities telling me to "get educated".
  • Sally House I'm a Mensan too, and I have a master's degree. Something tells me the average pit bull owner isn't even as educated as I am, let alone more so.
  • Laurie Kuhn This dog had dog issues in her foster home and this sanctuary houses her with many other dogs. I bet if she kills on of them they will cover it up.
  • AJ Ravinsky Most likely. Nutters cover up a lot when their pits go pit. I had to leave some of the rat discussion groups because the teenyboppers who thought they could overcome Nature by having "ratties" and"pitties" together would nonchalantly and casually mention how their "pitties" killed their pet rats. They DO cover these things up, I've seen them do it. One of the worst who shall remain nameless, discovered she had severe asthma caused by the rats, so she had to rehome all of them. I was praying a sigh of relief because now it meant none of her pet rats would ever be eaten or crippled by her "pitties" again.
  • Laurie Kuhn Oh yeah AJ Ravinsky I don't know anyone with a pit bull who hasn't covered something up that they have mauled or killed
  • Laurie Kuhn Working at an animal shelter at one time I was on the inside. I know what pit bull owners cover up and I know what shelters cover up
  • AJ Ravinsky Now you see one reason why I won't adopt to them. BTW not sure how you do adoptions for your rescue, but do you ask if they own dogs and if so, what breeds? I can privately give you some inside tips on how to doublecheck what they tell you.  (this is a public group so I won't give them away here.)
  • Laurie Kuhn Yeah I ask about dogs but any info received is appreciated
  • Ryan McCabe Typical low-class person. Don't blame the breed, er, bread.
  • Liza Mae You done good. But I must take note: loyalty and lovingness are bred into pit bulls, but gameness I must be taught! *head ecplodes*
  • Fataah Ewe' Good for you Laurie.
  • David Natalizia Laurie, you do need to educate yourself. Don't you realize that this year alone Shih Tzus have caused over 30 fatalaties in the U.S.? Because, as they say, it is not the breed at all. Oh wait, maybe those numbers aren't right... Which breed is it again that's racked up those numbers?
  • Ryan McCabe David, it's the poodle/pit mix
  • Kris King The ignorance is astounding. People and animals are being mauled and killed because of the naïve pit owners who believe the myths. After rescuing pits for a short time (and every last one became dog aggressive) I refused to adopt to any home with a bully breed.
  • Kris King Another thing that is frustrating is that I can't raise money to save my sanctuary dogs, but if they were pit bulls, people would donate. That is the only thing I can say about the pit advocates is they do put their money where their mouth is. Unfortunately, they are advocating for the wrong breed.
  • AJ Ravinsky Kris, Say your rescued dogs are "terrier mixes" and "canine mixes", that'll work!
  • Laurie Kuhn What I think is funny is I have a standard poodle and when I talk dogs with dog people I always mention him because I LOVE him and the bread oops I mean breed LOL and if the pit thing comes up they always say something like the worst attack I've ever seen was by a standard poodle LOL. Not that a standard is incapable of attacking but It cracks me up. I wonder if I said different breed if they would say that breed. When I first got him people were warning me they have a high prey drive and you can't have them around small animals and I have cats and my life is rabbit and rat rescue so we can't have killers in the house. I talked to my vet about it and she said put it this way I have never even heard of a poodle killing a cat so I think you are OK. I wonder why they think they have to demonize other breeds who are not aggressive generally. Now I also have a Shih Tzu and he does bite A LOT but because of his size and smashed in face the damage is very minimal but even so I keep strong control of him around strangers and especially children.
  • Ryan McCabe That's how they lie to insurance companies. You know most of the owners don't have a pot to piss in (excuse my language).
  • Laurie Kuhn And to be honest the shih Tzu is like a pit bull in that he acts very nice and then the bite can come out of no where. So even though he doesn't do that much damage (most of the time he doesn't break the skin) it is still my responsibility to protect people from him. I don't understand why they don't get that.
  • David Natalizia Laurie, part of the reason why I picked Shih Tzu for my facetious example is that as far as I can tell they are responsible for zero fatalities (if you don't count a scratch that became infected and an owner tripping over their dog) in the last decade in the U.S.... But yes, I see your point.
  • Kris King Totally agree that pit owners and rescues lie to cover up pit attacks. Several rescuers have told me of horrific experiences with rescued pits, yet refuse to state it publicly. Another one is now remembering her horse being mauled as the pit not being involved, even though a pit and heeler mix were the 2 original dogs involved. Because of being outspoken about the dangers of pits, I am not liked in the rescue world. People that I considered rescue friends are no longer willing to associate with me because of the anti-pit stigma. One of them feels exactly the same way that I do, but will not admit her beliefs publicly nor support me when I do.
  • Laurie Kuhn @David: oh I wasn't saying that because you used Shih Tzus as an example I was saying because somehow they don't get that they are responsible for their dogs behavior. And although no bite is funny you can't get that worked up about a shih tzu bite LOL
  • Kris King Agree Laurie. The pit crowd argument, "Chihuahuas and other small dogs bite more" is so ridiculous.....
  • Crystal Ross Keller Makes me wonder what God will think on judgment day with these silent people that avert their eyes to the suffering. Remember the saying of all it takes for evil to persist is for one to stay silent. They are responsible in some part for every victim.
  • Kris King Agree Crystal that the silent people who know the truth are contributing to the casualties by their silence.
  • Sylvia Kidd Good for you Laurie
  • Joanna McGinn I'm a 'mensan' too... went to three meetings but was BORED stiff... and then never found the time to attend another. LOL If I wanted to hang around with a lot of 'echos' I'd go back, but I have had too much going on in REAL life to hang around with them.... and have 2 MAs... Ed Psych and Sociology (world development focus).... I'd rather spend my time with you guys than sipping a beverage with most of the so-called 'smart' people.... I think doing a story about the shoe-shine guy in the D.C. train station got me off that 'train'.... he really taught me how to look at life in a whole new way.
  • Lynne Smith Love it when they tell you to get educated after saying "they were bred to be loyal, loving family dogs". They were NEVER bred for those traits.
  • Julia Lewis Well done, Laurie! And what a rude response from that person. They make themselves look so unpleasant. You were being reasonable and polite and that's how they come back at you.
  • Julia Lewis "Bred to be loyal, family dogs" Whaaat!!!
  • AJ Ravinsky Laurie, They demonize other breeds because they believe their breed is the only one that matters. They shove all other breeds (esp. toy breeds) under the bus ALL the time.
