- NOW A COMMENT FROM A VICTIM, ANTI BSL ADVOCATE:
Brian Adamson I think any large dog (GSD, Rott, Akita, etc.)
need to be handled in a manner that ensures the safety and
well being of anyone that it comes in contact with. They might
be the sweetest dog in the world but if a dog that size
decides it wants to attack for whatever reason it could be the
end of someones life. Pit bull type dogs are no different. In
fact I would say it is even more important with pit bulls. Not
because they are more dangerous, but because they really
don't need any more bad publicity. What I see happening is
pit bull type dogs being pushed as though they are not in the
same category as the other large breed dogs as far as safety
is concerned. People don't outright say that as much as the
manner in which they defend the breed says it. I understand
that when people portray our dogs a demons it is natural to
present them as angels, but it has the effect of making
people think we are blind to the fact that these dogs do
sometimes hurt people. I don't want to sound like I am j
j
umping on the pit bulls are dangerous wagon, but I want it
to
be okay to acknowledge that they are not accident proof
even if they seem like they would never hurt anyone. I am not
accusing anyone here of being ignorant to this fact or of
denying that our dogs are in fact dogs and have the ability to
. I just want to point out, as Loca did, that it is a good
idea to think about what we say and how we say it when it
comes to our dogs so we don't accidentaly misrepresent the
breed My dog is a ball of muscle and love. She is not
aggressive toward people at all and even when she has
been
in a position where she went into defend mode, she didn't try
to bite, she just cornered the person and would not let them
move until I backed her off. Regardless of this whenever she
is meeting someone new I make sure to control the
introduction because she is a dog and dogs bite. Just
because she has not doesn't mean she can't and i am not
willing to lose her or see someone get hurt when I have the
ability ,and responsibility for that matter, to prevent it from
happening. It is easy to get lulled into a care free mentality
when your dog is so good around everyone, but I treat the
like I would if my dog was a child and i am always
aware of whewre she is and what she is doing. It is like
insurance, you spend a little money that you won't be getting
back for something you hope you never need. A little caution
even if it ends up never being needed is well worth the extra
effort in case you ever do need to prevent something bad. I
hate when I do this.... ramble on and on. Then i just want to
delete the whole thing but i am just going to shut up and hit
post now. Thanks
