Jeffrey Sloan Hork Cheung - what about using fishing line or piano wire to make a garrotte to stop the attack on your dog? (victims advocates or pitbull haters?)

If your dog is being savagely attacked, what action would you take? Would you wait for the other owner to get the dog away? Or would you step in straight away and use all your might? How much force would you use?

  • Paris Wolf I would be smart and distance myself to avoid injury. But I would do what I could do safely. ,And be it by knife,, gu n, pepper spray, what have you. And I would call 911, take pics for evidence. Especially take pics of the owner and dog.

  • Raven Brooks I would take action and have. you need to grab them by the collar between the ears. Straddle them and pry the jaws open. You will cut your finger. get a tetanus shot if you feel it is necessary and /or treat with antibiotic ointment and soak in epsom salts.Simple as that. You need to go in as the alpha as well.Key you must have ahold of the pit by the collar. that is how it can't turn on you. And everyone is not equiped to do anything. Most people do nothing or try beating them over them head. Beating them over the head does not work. And you need to know what kind of pit you are dealing with. I mean you never know but a household pet pulled off by a dog lover is not like a dog that is encouraged to be aggressive being pulled off.Your advantage is they are in like a blackout when it happens. Alpha dog lover gets there attention and they will forget they just attacked another animal .And again. I am talking about the family pets who have been raised right from a puppy.

  • Raven Brooks Definitely someone needs to be calling 911 if possible.this is a first aid emergency. Person who is taking action against the pit needs to instruct someone else if there is someone else to call 911 if necessary because they will just stand there . Must people freesze up when this happens.

  • Raven Brooks Average person does not carry a gun or a knife. Average person carries a cell phone. They need to use it. No one knows where this is going . And we know. Need first responders. For any pitbull attack. The first responders have guns if you don't. Paramedics after the fact.

  • Lee Hindman Well, I carry a firearm so the attack wouldn't last very long.

  • Amber A Maclin Yep. I will not wait for owners. I will kill if I have to. I use my stun gun first aiming for the nose or stomach if that doesn't work my knife comes out next

  • Jeffrey Sloan What Alfredo said. Seriously. Dog owners need to be desperate enough enough to save their dog that they will do whatever it takes, by any means possible. I have a lot of respect for the old lady who bit the attacking pit bull in the jugular vein to save her little dog.

  • Alfredo Mendívil If I go out with my dog I wouldn't left my house without a stick, knife or pepper gas. The other day 10 dogs pack run against me in open field, like those African dogs believe me it wasn't funny...

  • Sandi Lynn When I called 911 they asked what I wanted them to do. Seriously! That was after I got back to my phone, because my choice was to save our livestock or make a call. I am trained marksman and a gun was not right for this job! But next time I will secure the dog, then shoot it, done. With seconds to respond, a weapon is a faster response to protect... A water hose if you can get one is great!

  • Laurie Anne In my case, and in the case of many other victims, it was remarkable that the owners do nothing but watch. I begged the owner of the pit to help me, as it tore up the flesh of my old dogs, but she stood there. I advise not to expect owners to help. These aren't fights, but rather attacks. I avoid danger, but if danger strikes out of no where again, I am prepared to protect us.

  • Hork Cheung Here in UK, guns, knives and pepper spray are illegal. Only thing you can use is probably a stick.

  • Stacy Renee Snow That's stupid. Well, they make a stick to pry open a Pit's mouth and sell it online. You could google for it.

  • Hork Cheung It is illegal, under UK law, to carry a knife, a gun or even a stick to help protect yourself from being attacked. Fatalities from dog attack are much rarer here but still happens. Hate it when owners cannot control their dogs. Any dogs with an aggressive tendency should be on a lead in a public area.

  • Jamie Carter Park I step back.
One day I may lose my dog but I had a case where the guy put his hands in a pit bulls mouth to save his daughters chihuahua. He couldn't use his hands the same ever again.
The dog lived but the man spent over a year anticipating another attack.

  • John Tawaroa First time i was 7 years old so i just stood there crying while my dog was killed and eaten.
But the other time as an adult i had just finished cutting wood and took my dog for a walk when a pit came out of nowhere flipped my dog on its back and tried
to disembowel my dog, lucky i still had my steel cap boots on and kicked the shit out of the pit till it run away.
After i went and got some steel blue running shoes the same as these in link, i love them, am on my 5th pair.

  • Randy DeCarlo Sandy raised a good point. One way to put an end to this is to shoot the offending dog EVEN after you safely separate them. Obviously our animal control laws and courts aren';t going to stop these dogs but a carefully placed bullet will.

  • Sarah Halas I would use any and all force I am capable of at the time immediately. No waiting. If that means I have a gun or knife on me I will use it and that animal will not be given another chance to attack again because it will be dead.
